Mexican artisans

who work in the manufacturing of the popular “rebozo” (shawl) using different traditional and innovative techniques will be able to participate in the fourth National Rebozo Contest which is being organized by the National Fund for the Promotion of Handicrafts ( Fonart ) and the government of Michoacán .

For this edition, the contest will award three prizes for each category: 22 thousand pesos for the first place; 18 thousand pesos for the second, and 14 thousand pesos for the third place.

In addition, a National Prize of 96 thousand pesos will be awarded to the best rebozo chosen by the jury, which will be made up of specialists in folk art and handicrafts.

The material, technique and design of the pieces will be key elements to choosing the best one.

The call is aimed at artisans over 18 years and includes 11 categories: cotton shawls woven on waist loom and colonial loom; wool shawls woven on waist loom and colonial loom; silk, artisela and rescue shawls in natural dyes or embroidery.

The call also includes a category for innovative pieces that combine traditional techniques and materials with new proposals.

The objective of the contest is to promote and safeguard this tradition, choosing Michoacán as the venue for the large number of localities in this state that elaborate this garment, such as Ahuirán, Aranza, Morales, Jiquilpan, Ocampo, Pátzcuaro, San Francisco Uricho, Tócuaro, Turicaro and Zirahuén. However, the call is open to artisans from all states that have a variety of textile production. The registration of pieces is from July 3 to August 2. The awards ceremony will be held on September 6 in Morelia .
