Tepehuanes

, indigenous Mexicans of Northwestern, Western, and some parts of North-Central Mexico , have established in the south of the state of Sinaloa , but their language is no longer spoken, informed the Secretariat of Culture in a report.

Jorge Alejandro Partida Crespo

encountered this obstacle in El Trébol 2 , a community located in the municipality of Escuinapa , Sinaloa. Partida is the coordinator of the project Linguistic Integration of Tepehuano Through the Reading and Writing of Traditional Stories, Myths, and Legends , which received funds from the Support Program to Municipal and Community Cultures (Pacmyc) in 2012.

The region has less than 200 inhabitants , 80 of which live in indigenous dwellings. The Tepehuan community in that area was founded approximately 25 years ago and came originally from the state of Durango.

“When we arrived at the community we thought that the language was spoken, but the municipal agent informed us that it was no longer used and only the elders , those who were born in Durango, used it on some occasions,” said the promoter and Spanish teacher.

“We had to change the project to rescue the memories and stories that the Tepehuan people of El Trébol 2 heard when they were children. In the process came up the idea of integrating children from the community to illustrate the short stories and when we started, we realized that the elders were already forgetting them,” said Partida.

The reach of Cuentos, mitos y leyendas tepehuanos . Ilustrados por niños (Tepehuan stories, myths, and legends illustrated by children) was immediate and those who acquired the free book “got to know the indigenous community of the region since not many people knew that there were Tepehuanes in that zone.”

A total of 600 books were printed, the planning of which lasted 2 months and its completion a complete year . 4 teachers participated and the books were distributed in schools in the municipalities of Escuinapa and Culiacán , as well as the people of the community.

“Those who have a book guard these stories, these myths and legends , in order to pass them on to other persons and family,” concluded Partida.
