American singer Chris Cornell, leader of bands such as Soundgarden and Audioslave, passed away yesterday at the age of 52 in the city of Detroit.
The also Temple of the Dog singer was playing in Detroit with Soundgarden, band who had kicked off a US tour last April, stated CNN, who cited a press release by his agent, Brian Bumbery.
According to Bumbery, the decease of the singer was “sudden and unexpected”.
“His wife Vicky and his family were shocked to hear about his sudden and unexpected decease and will work along with forensic doctors to determine the cause of his death”, added Bumbery.
Cornell's family and agent thanked “his fans for the continuous love and support that they have shown” and urge them to “respect their privacy through such a painful moment”.
According to local TV station WXYZ (property of ABC), American news site TMZ reported that Cornell's body was found in the bathroom of the MGM Grand Casino Hotel where he was staying.
Although the final report of the autopsy has not been finished as of yet, it has been officially confirmed that the former Audioslave member was found with a strap tied around his neck, which confirms the early theory that indicated that he had taken his own life.
Toxicological exams are still in process to determine if Cornell consumed illegal substances previous to his death. The musician was addicted to alcohol and drugs for decades although he assured to be clean since 2003.
The alternative rock musician, winner of a Grammy, had just played with his band last Wednesday at the Fox Theatre in Detroit, Michigan.
Cornell was born in Seattle, Washington, 52 years ago and started playing the piano when he was 7. His music career started in Seattle when he formed Soundgarden in 1984, band who played a key role in the “grunge” movement of the 90's. The group disbanded in 1997 and it was in 2001 when Cornell joined three Rage Against the Machine ex-members to form Audioslave.
The artist also performed the James Bond movie, Casino Royale's, main theme, "You know my name".
