Mexico's president on Friday congratulated Donald Trump on his inauguration as U.S. president, saying he would see to strengthen ties, but cautioning that the sovereignty, national interest and protection of Mexicans would be paramount.

President Enrique Pena Nieto said on Twitter he would seek "respectful" dialogue with the government of Trump, who angered many Mexicans on the campaign trail by deriding them as rapists and murderers and vowing to build a massive wall along the U.S. southern border to keep them out.
