Mexico's government announced it has extradited drug lord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán to the United States.
The drug lord is wanted on drug trafficking and other charges in said country.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the extradition via Twitter.
The Sinaloa cartel leader has been held most recently in a prison located in the border city of Ciudad Juárez.
He had fought extradition since his recapture a year ago.
U.S. authorities took custody of Guzmán in Ciudad Juárez, across the border from El Paso, Texas, and a plane carrying him departed for New York at 5:31 p.m. Eastern time.
