Benjamin Medrano, a congressman with Mexico's ruling party came out as gay during a meeting with the Committee on Constitutional Matters while members were debating the same-sex marriage bill proposed by the Mexican president, who is of the same party.
While speaking, the Zacatecas legislator said that he would be voting in support of the bill, and he also thanked the support his party has shown him as a candidate, despite their intention to vote against and bury the bill.
“The LGBT community have expressed their anger with me before, but unfortunately things weren't in my hands while I was municipal president. However, now, as a congressman, I can fight for our rights,” he said at the meeting with his peers.
Medrano reassured his allegiance to his party, but he said that as a gay man he cannot vote against the bill.
The bill was rejected by the Commission, with 19 who voted against it and only eight in support.
