Students at the María Elvira Delgado Calderón elementary school in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, were asked to wear helmets to class out of fear that they might be injured by falling debris from the deteriorating state of their classroom's ceilings and walls.
Parents reported the poor conditions of six of the elementary school's classrooms to the municipal Civil Protection department.
According to a preliminary report, one of the classrooms has been temporarily closed down by the department, and students were temporarily moved to the school's computer center in the meantime.
Several parents said that they've since sent a formal request to the head of Sinaloa's Educational Infrastructure Institute, Bernardino Antelo Vilches, demanding that the proper repairs be made to the six classrooms, which they say are in “deplorable” conditions.
