The vice-president of the Lower Chamber, Alejandro Ojeda, announced that his party, the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD), will present a new project promoting same-sex marriage in the next ordinary term, as the new social relations cannot be overlooked.
The congressman reminded that his initiative proposes to reform the concept of the traditional family, conformed by a man an a woman, which is found in the 4th article of the Mexican Constitution, so as to have diverse family models recognized by the Mexican Magna Carta.
The announcement comes days after the Committee of Constitutional Affairs voted against a similar initiative promoted by the federal government. However, Ojeda noted that it is no longer possible to discuss a single family model but rather acknowledge “the diversity of the families … as the concept of family has moved forward thus leaving the old model as unacceptable”, he added that no religious entity can grant itself the power to impose a single family model and he rejected any attempt of the clergy to infringe upon strictly secular, civil and human rights matters.
