Civil Aid Plan set off in Holbox landfill

Personnel of the 7th Cavalry Regiment of the Ministry of Defense carries out fire mitigation efforts in the landfill known as “El Mapache”

The Ministry of Defense (SEDENA), through the Military Command of the 34th military zone, set off the Civil Aid Plan DN-III-E, as part of the mitigation efforts of the open air fire in the landfill of “El Mapache” in Holbox island.

In a release, the Ministry of Defense informed that personnel from the Seventh Motorized Cavalry Regiment, based in Chetumal, is currently conducting fire mitigation efforts to extinguish the fire that has already destroyed 80 tons of organic and inorganic waste through an area of 6,500 square feet.

Also contributing to the mitigation efforts in “El Mapache” is personnel of the National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR), National Commission of Protected Areas (CONANP), Federal Attorney of Environmental Protection (PROFEPA), Ministry of Navy (SEMAR), State Ministry of Ecology and Environment, Civil Protection of Lázaro Cárdenas municipality and local volunteers.

The fire started last Thursday before noon and according to the state official of the National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR), Rafael León Negrete, 54 people using specialized equipment, are actively participating in the mitigation efforts with the help of a 10,000 liter water pipe, a UNIMOG fire tanker, a motorboat, four pickup trucks, an ATV, two backhoes, a military jeep, three Humvee VTP units, a Mark 3 fire pump, a motorbike and a dump truck.
