Young woman shares story of violent attack by ex-boyfriend and sparks public outrage

A young women shares her story of domestic abuse at the hands of her ex-boyfriend, a guitarist in several rock bands who beat her for over five hours straight and left her hospitalized.
Ximena Gama is a model who decided to share her story and express her anger over the wave of gender-related violence that a machista country like Mexico is currently experiencing and that largely go unprosecuted.
Ximena shared a series of photographs on Tuesday where she can be seen with severe bruising all over her body, a fractured nose, and other injuries.
In the photograph's description, she reveals that her ex-boyfriend, named Sabu Avilés and a guitarist for the bands “Los Infierno” and “Los Explosivos,” held her hostage in her apartment, where he beat her continuously for over five hours.
“Whenever I tried to escape and get help, he'd drag me across my apartment floor by my hair, then beat me, spit on me, kick me, bang my head against the wall. I lost consciousness several times. He punched me in my stomach and ribs, knocking the wind out of me, like if I were a sack of potatoes,” she shared.
According to Ximena, the attack took place on September 3, after Avilés accused her of cheating on him.
Ximena also said on her Facebook account that several of his ex-girlfriends have reached out to her, sharing their own experiences of physical and psychological abuse at the hands of Avilés.
Ximena Gama decided to share her story in an attempt to bring attention to the massive wave of gender violence and female homicides that Mexico is currently experiencing.
“I decided to speak out about my abuse and say that enough is enough! I express my solidarity with all the women who've been through the same hell that I have. Anyone can be a victim of gender violence: your sister, your mother, your friend. Anyone who's too psychologically damaged and afraid to speak out, and who believes that she is all alone in the world. Thanks to the indifference towards these types of cases, this country is experiencing an explosion in the number of cases of women murdered on a daily basis at the hands of the men in their lives who supposedly “love” them. We women now have to go through our lives not knowing if we're going to wake up alive tomorrow.”
