Members of the National Front for the Family deliverd 596,453 signatures to Mexican lawmakers of Mexico's conservative political party, the PAN, in a show of opposition to President Enrique Peña Nieto's same-sex marriage bill proposal.
“With the signatures collected, we're asking legislators to vote nay on the same-sex marriage bills currently being considered, including the bill proposed by the President back in May,” said spokesmen for the National Front.
At a press conference, the legislator Margarita Alemán Olvera of the PAN said that the signatures will be delivered to the Directive Board of the lower house of Mexico's Congress for their consideration.
“To overcome Mexico's many problems, we need to strengthen the social nucleus, and we're asking politicians to include in their public policies the perspective of family as a tool for the country to move forward,” said Arzamendi Mendoza.
He also said that according to the National Front, marriage is a union between one man and one woman for the procreation of children, and that's what they're fighting for.
