The sons of jailed drug lord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán apparently ordered the ambush on an army convoy using grenades and high-powered guns on Friday, killing six soldiers, said local military commander Gen. Alfonso Duarte Mújica.
The attack in the capital city of the northern state of Sinaloa, Culiacán, was apparently launched to free a wounded detenee being transported in an ambulance guarded by the convoy.
The wounded suspect was identified as Julio Óscar Ortíz Vega also known as “El Kevin.”
"At this point, it is very probable that it was the sons of El Chapo," said Duarte.
Duarte also said the wounded man was arrested by soldiers after a gun fight in the township of Badiraguato, Sinaloa, where the sons of “El Chapo” have been fighting against the Beltrán Leyva cartel to control the area.
Meanwhile, Governor of Sinaloa, Mario López, urged citizens to provide any information that could lead to the people responsible for this violent act.
