The Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN) said that the slain mayor of San Juan Chamula, Domingo López González, who was murdered along other four people a week ago, caused the incident when his bodyguards began to shot people and that the number of people killed is far too bigger than the official toll.
"Some went to die at their land and other bodies were removed by their relatives while wounded or already dead," according to the rebel group.
According to their version of the events, the "bodyguards of the corrupt mayor" ... "began the shooting and killed and wounded many people in the main square."
“It was later that the other armed group arrived in order to kill off those authorities. Yes, to kill off because they have been already killed with clubs and machete," reported the rebels in a comuniqué signed by "Commander Moisés".
The rebels say that the official version of the events wants to present López González as a victim, not as an aggressor.
"The savage Chamulas, media say, killed him" last June 24, expressed the rebels.
López González, alderman Narciso Lunez Hernández and aides Miguel López Gómez, Ernesto Pérez Pérez, and Silvano Hernández Díaz were beaten and shot to death that day. Also, other 15 people were wounded.
According to the official version, it all began when hundreds of members of the Tzotzil ethnic group arrived at the area of San Juan Chamula to ask López González for US$2.6 million in grants for public works and artisans. But, somehow things got out of control and the mayor was killed.
