Mexican Senate praises Canada for lifting visa requirements

The head of the North American Commission said that the Canadian premier is a man of his word.

The president of the North American Foreign Affairs Commission of the Mexican Senate, Marcela Guerra Castillo, praised the government of Canada for the announcement of the elimination of the visa requirements for Mexican citizens, starting next October 1.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the decision today. The visa requirements were reimposed in 2009 by Trudeau's predecessor, Stephen Harper.

Guerra Castillo, currently in Chile, said that "this is very good news, getting the people and governments of Mexico and Canada even closer."

The senator from the ruling Revolutionary Institutional Party also congratulated Trudeau for the decision and said that the "made good to his campaign promise."
