Young people dressed in black and with their faces covered blocked Insurgentes avenue south of Mexico City, near the main premises of the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
The protesters destroyed a bus stop and demanded the release of political prisoners, with no specifics immediately known.
A group of grenadiers has been deployed to the area and they are keeping an eye on the protesters.
