Mexican Patricia Espinosa, current Mexican Ambassador to Germany, was nominated by U.N. General-Secretary Ban Ki-moon to be the new head of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

According to the UNFCCC official website, the U.N. Secretary General has concluded the selection process for the next Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC with the selection of Mexican Patricia Espinosa.

Patricia Espinosa is also a former ambassador to Slovakia, Austria and Slovenia, and served as Minister of Foreign Affairs in the cabinet of former President Felipe Calderón.

The UNFCCC is an international environmental treaty that resulted from negotiations during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992. It entered into force on 21st March 1994.
