The Popocatéptl volcano erupted in the early hours of the day and covered an enormous area in Puebla and the nearby states with a massive precipitation of ash.
The State Coordination of Civil Protection and the Ministry of Health called the population to avoid outdoor activities, to prevent any damages to the respiratory system.
The head of public services in San Pedro Cholula, Javier Boleaga Romero, reported that personnel from that agency collected up to 1.5 tons of volcanic ash in the area.
The holder of the Civil Protection Unit, Raymundo Clemente Carrera, pointed out that the authorities are touring the areas of Paso Cortés, San Agustín Calvario, Santa María, San Gregorio Zacapechpan Acuexcomac and other neighborhoods.
He stressed that there is a preliminary traffic alert in the region and Commissioner of Public Security, Francisco Camacho Morales, reported that the authorities are distributing more than 400 surgical masks.
The local authorities reiterated that the volcanic ash should not be thrown to the drain and pets should be kept inside while windows and doors are sealed with wet rags. Also, when people wipe the ash, it should be disposed of in plastic bags.
Also, in the state of Tlaxcala, the State Civil Protection Coordination and the Department of Health asked people to restrict their outdoor activities due to the accumulated ash.
