Spain's National Court has dropped an investigation into former Institutional Revolutionary Party chief Humberto Moreira  arrested last month in a corruption probe.

The court said in a statement Tuesday that it was dismissing the case because the perpetration of the offenses was unclear. It added that Spain couldn't probe crimes allegedly committed in Mexico or the U.S. and that there was nothing to indicate Moreira belonged to an organized gang.

Moreira was arrested on Jan. 15 in Madrid under suspicion of embezzling public funds, money laundering and belonging to a criminal organization. He was provisionally released a week later.

Moreira was governor of Coahuila state from 2005-2011 during which time the state's debt rose from US$27 million to US$3 billion.
