According to the Citizen Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice, the city of Cuernavaca, Morelos, will soon leave the list of the most dangerous cities in Latin America.
A study conducted by the organization based in Mexico indicates that eight cities considered in the list during 2014 left it in the last year. The cities are Belo Horizonte (Brazil); Medellín and Cúcuta (Colombia); and Chihuahua, Cuernavaca, Juárez, Nuevo Laredo and Torreón (Mexico).
Mexico has seen the greatest improvements in the list since 2011, when 12 of its cities were on the ranking.
The study also indicates that Caracas remains as the most dangerous city in the region, with 119.87 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants. It is followed by San Pedro Sula, Honduras (111.03); San Salvador (108.54), Acapulco (104.73) and Maturin, Venezuela (86.45).
According to the study, with the implementation of a unified police command in Morelos under the direction of the state and federal authorities, starting in 2013, the important crimes have fall at least 28 percent. That represents a greater decrease than the national percentage of 18.
