The Ministry of the Interior declared an emergency in 22 municipalities in the northern state of Sonora, due to the severe snowfall which affected the area from December 26 to 29.

In a statement, the Ministry reported that the emergency was declared for the municipalities of Atil, Bacarona, Opodepe, Rosario, Ures and Villa Hidalgo due to frozen conditions.

Also, heavy snowfall caused the emergency in Agua Prieta, Bacoachi, Bacerac, Bavispe, Cananea, Fronteras, Huachinera, Nácori Chico, Nogales, Sahuaripa, Santa Cruz and Yécora.

The municipalities of Arizpe, Imuris, Naco and Nacozari de García suffered both freezing and snowfall during the last days of December.
