The Wonder Woman movie has officially begun filming, and star Gal Gadot shared a photo of herself as the superhero to celebrate the occasion.
Gadot tweeted a photo of herself in a cloak and Wonder Woman’s famous tiara with a foggy London scene visible in the background.
“Almost 75 years in the making... #WonderWoman is underway,” she said.
The 75-year-reference comes from the first appearance of the character created by American psychologist and writer William Moulton Marston.
Created during World War II, the character was initially depicted fighting Axis military forces as well as an assortment of colorful supervillains, one of them a big intelligent egg, although over time her stories came to place greater emphasis on characters, deities, and monsters from Greek mythology
Chris Pine joins Gadot in the cast as Captain Steve Trevor, along with Robin Wright, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Ewen Bremner, Said Taghmaoui, Elena Anaya and Lucy Davis.
Gadot will first step into Wonder Woman’s uniform in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” this spring; the standalone film drops June 23, 2017.
In addition to the comics, the character has appeared in other media; most notably, the 1975–1979 Wonder Woman TV series starring Mexican-American Lynda Carter, as well as animated series depicting teams such as the Super Friends and Justice League.
Wonder Woman also appeared in The Lego Movie, which was released in February 2014, voiced by Cobie Smulders. This marked her first theatrical film appearance.
