Forecasters say a tropical storm has formed off the Mexican coast and could strengthen into a hurricane on Thursday.

The U.S. Hurricane Center said Tuesday that the depression formed south of the Gulf of Tehuantepec and is located about 445 miles (716 kilometers) southeast of Acapulco. It currently has winds of 35 mph (56 kph).

The depression is expected to become a tropical storm later Tuesday and could make landfall along Mexico's Pacific coast later this week.
