Mexican journalist Carmen Aristegui announced that her lawyers, Javier Quijano and Javier Cortina, will file a complaint against Mexico's government for denial of justice before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.
The initiative, called the "Declaration of Medellín" seeks to call into question freedom of expression in Latin American democracies and is backed by the Latin American journalists attending the Festival of Gabriel García Márquez Journalism Award.
Mónica González, director of the Center for Investigative Journalism (CIPER) of Chile, said that the journalists gathered in Medellín would sign a letter to support Carmen Aristegui and her team of reporters, who were fired from MVS Radio.
"This is a big step because when we are together we understand that we are strong, and when we are strong we not only do it for us, but also for the future, dignity and quality of life of Latin American people," González said.
The Mexican journalist said that this case is relevant for Latin America and celebrated that journalists joined the initiative because the core of the issue is freedom of expression and "this is a battle that we will not win alone.”
She explained that "Mexico's justice system and government denied us justice, and that goes against our rights and the right of the audience."
