Gildardo López Astudillo, better known as “El Gil”, was arrested in Taxco by Mexico's Federal Police for his alleged involvement in the disappearance of 43 students of Ayotzinapa teachers training college, who were last seen in Iguala in September last year.
López was the deputy of Sidronio Casarrubias Salgado, leader of the Guerreros Unidos criminal gang that allegedly burned the students beyond recognition and threw their ashes to a river.
At a press conference on November 7, 2014, former attorney general Jesús Murillo Karam said that López sent messages referring to the students as members of “Los Rojos”, a rival gang of Guerreros Unidos.
