The University of the Valley of Mexico (UVM) chastised the actions of one of its medical students, who took a selfie with an apparently dying woman in a hospital.

The student, identified as María José González, from the northern city of Reynosa, accompanied the photo with the following message: "I was doing a watch and a lady was dying and, therefore selfieee."

In a statement issued through its official Twitter account, the UVM stated that this sort of actions "in no way reflect the values of this institution" and warned that the case will be brought before its Committee of Honor and Justice.

The photograph was shared by the young woman through a WhatsApp message, which was leaked by an unknown party on social networks.

The girl said that she intended the image to be private and not for sharing on social networks. On her Facebook account, María José said that the image was taken some time ago and with the "permission" of the elder woman, and the situation was taken out of context.

"Long ago I did a watch and a lady who was very sick became close to me and since it was the first day of my practice I obviously wanted to have a memento. I took several pictures and I asked permission from the lady to take a picture of us together," she said.

She also said that the older woman did not die, even when she wrote that such was the case.
