The parliamentary group of the Green Party (PVEM) at the House of Representatives seeks to punish with fines of over two million pesos (US$125,550) the distribution and sale among children and teenagers of adult-rated video games that promote violence.
The bill, presented by Congressman Antonio Cuellar Steffan, seeks to change the General Law on the Rights of Children and Adolescents.
Cuellar explained that video games with violent or sexual content pose a risk for the behavior and healthy mental development and social relations of children.
The proposal will be analyzed by the Commission for the Attention of Vulnerable Groups.
In 2013 17.7 million people played such videogames in Mexico, according to industry statistics.
