Mexican filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu was honored today with the Vanguard Award in Los Angeles by the Sundance Institute for his originality and independent spirit.

The "Birdman" director attended the ceremony accompanied by his wife, María Eladia Hagerman.

Inarritu's award was presented by "Selma" director Ava DuVernay, a Sundance Institute board member.

"I don't deserve an award for what I do with joy and freely, but I thank you for it," Iñárritu said.
