Mexico will produce 27% of the vehicles manufactured in North America by 2020, the Mexican Automotive Industry Association (AMIA) said.

Car production in Mexico is expected to grow from 3 million in 2013 to 5.1 million by 2020, the AMIA added.

Eduardo Solís, president of the Association, said that in the 20 years lapsed since the North American Free Trade Agreement entered into force, Mexico has increased its participation in the region's vehicle production by 12%, a percentage that is expected to rise to 27% by 2020.

Currently the United States manufactures 67% of the cars produced in the region.
